July Challenge: Summer Safety

There’s a lot to love about summer. Those long, lazy days, picnics and cookouts, pool time, beach time, and downtime with family and friends — summer is hard to beat. But with all that fun comes some risk, too. ER visits are known to spike in the summer, due to heat-related illnesses and injuries from accidents around pools, fireworks, and other hazards. Experts say that trend could only get worse as extreme heat becomes more common.

Sounds alarming, but don’t be scared — be prepared! Here are a few key ways to enjoy summer safely.

Load up on sun protection and bug spray. If you’re spending time outside (and we hope you are!), use an SPF of 30 or higher. Slather it on at least 15 minutes before you go outside and again every two hours, or after you swim or get sweaty. A bug spray with DEET can help ward off ticks and mosquitos.

Drink some water, then drink some more. Whether you’re mowing the lawn or spending a day at an amusement park, being out in the heat makes it even more important to stay hydrated, especially when you’re very active. Aim to drink a cup of water every 15-20 minutes you’re outside, and keep drinking for a few hours afterward to replace the water your body has lost. Keep up with regular meals and light snacks to replenish the salt you lose through sweat.

Make a stay-cool plan for the hottest days. Extreme heat kills more people each year than any other type of weather, according to the Red Cross. On days when temperatures climb, plan to spend a few hours where there’s air conditioning. Head to the mall, the movie theater, a library, or a local cooling center to give your body a break.
